[ Toro rosso STR12 ] text by tw (February 27, 2017.)
Toro Rosso's 2017 machine "STR 12" was announced on February 27, 2017 in Japan time.
The development technical director of this machine is James Ke,
Ben Waterhouse served as a minor technical director.
Last year we used Ferrari's one year old power unit, but this year we can use the Renault power unit with the same specs as Red Bull.
This is a very big factor.
For the picture of the new car 'STR 11', see F1 Tsushin.
Below, I write my opinion from the photograph.
Let's write down below while counting.
The nose tip became the same type as Mercedes.(1)
The protrusion disappears in the center, its left and right are also low.
The position of the nose side camera is far from the outermost in all teams. It is very aggressive.
Although it is a detailed element, three Pitot sensors at the nose hall are the same as Mercedes.
In the front suspension, the upper and lower wishbones were very high mount.
Like Mercedes of this year, the unsprung part extends upward from the upright and connects to the upper arm.(2)
Attachment to the upper arm body side is inevitably the same as Mercedes, and it is connected to a height close to the top face of the nose.
Like the Mercedes, the lower arm has a short front and rear span.(3)
The connecting position is as high as the middle position of the monocoque tip.
The rear lower arm is in the area just before the foot box and is in the same area as the suspension unit.
With this, the lower arm penetrates the monocoque and there is a possibility that it is jointed inside.
In that case, freedom is created for the length of the lower arm, and it can be set to the ideal camber change.
Toro Rosso had drawn an elegant curve last year from the top of the monocoque to the nose.
But this year, like Mercedes, as a straight monocoque top, it makes a sharp curve from the front suspension unit to the nose.(4)
Even if this person is unreasonable for airflow, the operational response of the front suspension improves.
It is the same as Red Bull of the presentation, there is no canard on the monocoque side.
They may still keep this part secret.
A few hours ago Red Bull appeared in a bold side pod, so I was watching what will happen to Toro Rosso of my brothers team.
The front side of the side pod is the evolution version of Toro Rosso of last year, but it is the same as this year's Mercedes over the back.
The upper part of the coke bottle line is a two-stage restriction like Mercedes.(5)
Pod wing is quite modest, development is slow.
However, it is a new shape that the vertical vane and the horizontal fin are separated.
The horizontal fin is a section of the wing which lifts, and the air flow on the side pod upper surface is adjusted.
The position of the rear part of the side pod is high, unlike Mercedes.
It is the same position and high as the upper arm of the rear suspension.
As far as the shape of the rear cowl is concerned, it inherits the shape of Toro Rosso last year.
Mercedes is different from Mercedes in that it is equipped with shark fin for low rear wing and that there is no slit at the front part of the rear wheel of the under panel.
Like Red Bull, the pull rod of the rear suspension extends forward and connects to the vehicle body side.
The devised 3D shaped monkey seat has the effect of sucking the exhaust flow and assisting the rear wing.
Although the rear wing is not as much as Mercedes, it curves slightly into a 3D shape, reducing the tip vortex.
The stay is a type of Swan neck, extending forward.
There are two slits on the lower side of the rear wing of the blade tip plate to reduce peeling of the lower surface of the wing.
It was Red Bull that I used this for the first time, but I devised it 4 years and 6 months ago and posted it on this site.
Adopting the top team's device is a shortcut to shorten the lap time.
And when I looked at the running photo of STR 12, I found that the rake angle was strong. This is the tendency of F1 machine in recent years.
I do not know whether there are engineers who transferred from Mercedes to Toro Rosso last year.
However, Toro Rosso changed the concept so far this year.
At least it is known at the moment, and 5 points also adopt the same idea as Mercedes.
Idea to connect the upper arm by extending the part upward from the upright, under the spring of the front wheel.
Rear end that squeezes the top of the coke bottle line in two stages.
What percentage is mathematically the probability that these happen coincidentally in nature at the same time?
In addition, I will add a word in case it should be misunderstood.
It is not bad for engineers to move and to communicate ideas to the next team.
I just stated the fact that happened this year. That's all.
The driver will continue to work with Carlos Saints and Danil Kubiato.
